What is the difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

What is the difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers

If you’re seeking the confidence boosting effects of aesthetic treatments that leave you looking and feeling like the best version of you, then Dermal Fillers and Botox could be the way to go. These procedures are known for improving facial structure and volume, maintaining the smooth texture of your skin and reducing the appearance of facial imperfections such as lines and wrinkles.

We understand there may be some apprehension surrounding these treatments, that can leave you feeling unsure about whether they’re right for you.

Here at London City Skin Clinic, we have outlined the key differences between Botox and Dermal Fillers to help you make a more informed decision about whether one, or both, of these aesthetic treatments will leave you feeling confident, healthy and naturally rejuvenated.

Botox

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified version of the botulinum toxin. As a treatment, it is designed to block nerve signals to a desired muscle. As a result, the muscles will move less, thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles for a healthier looking appearance. It is often used as a treatment to soften lines, and can also prevent deep lines from forming.

Botox is most often used on the upper face, around the eyes and the areas surrounding the mouth. Also, because of its relaxing properties, it has been known to help alleviate the symptoms of jaw grinding, chronic headaches, migraines and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Botox is prescription-only treatment and must be prescribed for a patient by a medically qualified practitioner.

What is Botox

What are the complications of Botox?

Botox is one of the safest forms of cosmetic procedure available and is associated with very few side effects. If administered safely, the most noticeable complication is slight bruising and swelling around the injected area that will subside after a couple of days.

You may also experience a mild headache for the first 24 hours.

How long is a Botox procedure?

Depending on the extent of the procedure and the impacted area, Botox can take 10-20 minutes to administer. This makes it a quick process that can be easily slotted into your daily schedule.

How long does it take for Botox to heal?

It takes 2-3 days for the effects of Botox to start, but the full result will be present from around 10-14 days after the treatment has taken place.

In the first 2 days of healing, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area, and do not partake in activities such as vigorous exercise, sunbathing (or using sunbeds) or any other activity that involves excessive exposure to UV rays or perspiration.

Botox takes 3-10 days to take effect but the full result will be present from 2 weeks after the treatment has taken place.

How long does Botox last?

The effects of Botox can last for up to 3-4 months, making them a great solution for tackling the signs of ageing. However, it is recommended that you consider repeating the treatment at around 4 months for cumulative benefits and maintenance if you like the results.

Is Botox painful?

Most people experience minimal discomfort during Botox procedures as we use only a fine needle to administer. But, if you’re particularly susceptible to pain, your Doctor can apply numbing cream to the surface of your skin prior to the treatment.

If you’re nervous around needles, you may feel additional unease in the build up to the procedure, but rest assured that Dr. Robby Bajaj is committed to providing you with the highest level of care possible. Please feel free to alleviate any worries at your consultation appointment, or at any time during the procedure.

Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers are a form of soft tissue filler that is injected into the skin to fill in facial wrinkles, for contouring and structural support. They are most commonly used as an anti-ageing treatment but can also be used to soften skin folds, enhance plumpness to give a fuller look to the lips, jawline, cheekbones and other devoted areas of skin such as the hollow under your eyes. They are further used to restore lost volume in hands.

Dermal Fillers use hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that exists naturally in the body to maintain structure and hydration. The natural decline of its presence in skin tissue contributes to the appearance of skin ageing. When used correctly, the hyaluronic acid provides a natural result, and naturally dissolves over time.

Unlike Botox, Dermal Fillers are a cosmetic procedure and don’t require a prescription to be administered, although it is recommended you seek an experienced medical practitioner, as we believe these treatments should be carried out only by those who understand dermal fillers and how to manage any potential complications.

What are Dermal Fillers

What are the complications of Dermal Fillers?

Similar to Botox, when Dermal Fillers are applied by a registered medical professional, complications of the procedure are minor. It is common to experience mild swelling, bruising and redness in the first couple of days following the treatment, but these should disappear quickly.

How long is a Dermal Fillers Procedure?

Dermal Fillers take 30-60 minutes to administer, depending on the area being treated. As the application is slightly more complicated than Botox, it is important that extra care is taken to ensure a natural outcome.

How long does it take Dermal Fillers to heal?

The full results of Dermal Fillers should appear within 2-3 weeks after the procedure as it takes some time for the injectables to fully settle into your facial tissues. However, in a lot of instances, the actual healing time is so minimal, you could return to work the very next day.

You will be advised not to exercise for 24 hours after treatment and avoid excessive heat. You should also avoid touching and rubbing the treated areas, and are advised not to consume alcohol within this time period. Depending on the condition of your skin and your medical history, we may provide additional aftercare advice to help your Dermal Fillers settle naturally.

How long do Dermal Fillers last?

Dermal fillers are a temporary treatment and can last anywhere from 6-24 months, depending on the type of filler, the location of the filler, and the personal factors related to your metabolism. After this time, you’ll be able to return for treatment, but we suggest you have a proper treatment assessment with your practitioner.

Are Dermal Fillers Painful?

Dermal Fillers can be a little uncomfortable, which is why anaesthetic is already within the filler. Some areas of the face, such as the lips, can be more sensitive than others. At London City Skin Clinic, we aim to do everything we can to make your experience as comfortable as possible, and can apply numbing cream to treated areas wherever required.

Are Dermal Fillers Painful?

Combining Dermal Fillers and Botox

It’s commonly misconstrued that Botox and Dermal Fillers can’t be administered together. In fact, combining the two can lead to a completely rejuvenated appearance, more defined facial structure and fuller, youthful looking skin.

The combination effect is very powerful, as they have different mechanisms of action and compliment each other when treated correctly. Remember, Botox affects muscles and hence relaxes lines, but fillers add volume to lines and folds, or augments and enhances your appearance.
