Botox Aftercare Guide

Botox Aftercare Guide

Botox anti-wrinkle treatments are one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments due to their aesthetic and medical applications. Known for preventing chronic conditions like migraines, excessive sweating and jaw clenching (bruxism) as well as reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and premature ageing, it is not only an exceptional treatment option, but a subtle procedure that starts working in as little as 2-3 days.

Regardless of the reason for seeking treatment, it is always important to be aware of what to expect, including the expectations for care after Botox application. At London City Skin Clinic, we believe that the days following your treatment can impact how impactful the results can be, and because of this, aftercare should be more than just an afterthought.

Botox Aftercare

Botox requires minimal downtime and, in many cases, people can return to work immediately. However, to achieve the ultimate results from your treatment, you should abide by the following guidance:

  1. Leave the treated area untouched

After your Botox treatment, avoid touching the treated area for 12 hours.

Botox needs time to settle in your muscles and applying pressure can cause it to spread to other areas of your face leading to unintended results and potential complications. Additionally, keep your face/body upright for four hours following the treatment.

It is best to avoid applying makeup for 12 hours following your treatment because the punctures in your skin can become infected by bacteria in beauty products. If you have any doubts, seek the advice of your medical practitioner.

  1. Avoid excessive heat and sweating

Avoid direct and indirect heat on your skin for 24-48 hours. You are advised to stay away from strenuous activities that cause sweating. Such activities include:

  • Engaging in exercise
  • Saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs
  • Very hot showers

Excessive heat and exercise increase your blood pressure which can increase the risk of bruising and swelling, as well as the distribution of Botox and its metabolism.

  1. Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated can aid in your recovery from treatment. Although not directly crucial for the treatment itself, drinking plenty of water is important when you undergo non-surgical aesthetic treatments to minimise swelling and maintain healthy levels of hydration in your skin as the Botox settles.

  1. Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatory medication

Alcohol and anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen can thin your blood and increase the risk of bruising after Botox. To minimise this risk, it’s best to avoid consuming alcohol or taking these medications for at least 24 hours before and after your treatment.

If you have concerns about prescription medication, consult with your medical practitioner at your consultation appointment to ensure it is safe to go ahead with the treatment. Some other supplements which can impact blood thinning include fish oils and high dose Vitamin C.

  1. Stay away from UV exposure

Prolonged UV exposure including sun rays and sunbeds should be avoided for 48 hours post treatment. To prevent delays in healing time, it is advised that you apply a strong SPF to protect the area from direct sunlight for 2 days following treatment, although SPF should be applied daily to minimise the signs of ageing.

  1. Book your follow up appointment

Botox treatments should be repeated every 3-4 months to maintain results. Booking your appointment in advance will ensure that you don’t miss your appointment.

London City Skin Clinic provides further advice that is tailored to you. Following treatment, most people will be able to continue daily activities without disruption but it is pertinent to follow the advice of your medical practitioner to achieve the best possible result.

What to look out for

It is common for patients to experience minor swelling and possible bruising after their Botox appointment, but this is normal and should only last for a few days. The extent of these symptoms will depend on the nature of your treatment, the condition of your skin and the area of the face treated.

Choosing an experienced medical practitioner is advised, as complications with Botox can occur, such as:

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Persistent redness or bruising
  • Persistent pain in the treated area
  • Facial weakness or muscle drooping

If you experience the above then you must consult your  medical professional immediately.

How long does it take for Botox to heal?

It can take 2-3 days for the effects of Botox to become visible, but the full result will become evident from approximately 10-14 days following treatment.

At London City Skin Clinic, your safety and wellbeing is our top priority which is why every Anti-Wrinkle Treatment begins with a consultation to discuss your needs and medical history. We will also make sure that you are fully informed and comfortable with your chosen treatment before you decide to go ahead.
